Katalox, or Mexican Ebony as it is also known, is a dense stiff and strong hardwood. Yet it is also “surprisingly workable” according to hilltown woodworker Colin Piscioneri, who makes hair combs out of it. Katalox’s rich dark chocolate color is very appealing as an offset to the myriad of lighter colors available in the hardwood palette. Many of these can be seen in Colin’s “wavy” countertops in Shelburne Falls’ Mocha Maya, his bench on the Bridge of Flowers. Katalox is just one of many exotic hardwoods available at Forest Products.
